How to prepare your home for Autumn: Gutters and Home Maintenance

With Autumn now in full swing, it’s the perfect time to ensure that your home is in the best condition to face whatever weather is on the horizon. Keeping on top of your home maintenance and ensuring that your gutters are clean and working efficiently can give you peace of mind as well as avoiding issues developing or worsening.

There are lots of simple things you can do in advance of cooler or wetter weather to prepare your home for Autumn and beyond:

Clean your gutters

It’s essential that you inspect your gutters regularly as this is the easiest way to identify damage or leaks that may need to be repaired. Keep an eye on even the smallest cracks and never ignore something – maintaining gutters and cleaning them regularly is the best way to avoid larger problems developing.

Some gutters are relatively easy to clean and simply require debris such as dirt and leaves to be removed regularly – you can do some elements of gutter cleaning by hand although you may need a few tools.

If you have a two storey (or higher) home you’ll probably need expert help to reach all areas of your guttering.

How often you clean out your gutters will depend on a number of factors, but the most important is where your home is located. If you are free from overhanging trees you’ll want to just keep an eye on things every 3-4 months (with a special focus after any storm or wet/windy weather). If however you have trees that overhang your home you’ll want to remain constantly on top of your gutters and roof space.

At All Type Roofing, Gutters & Verandahs we can cater to whatever needs you have. We also have all types of styles of guttering from modern and colonial to contemporary – so we can help your home look its best.

Repair your roof

Many people put off repairing roof issues until it’s too late. This can result in repairs costing far more than would have been necessary and potentially causing a lot more damage.

All Type Roofing, Gutters & Verandahs can help with everything from roof restoration and roof replacement to minor roof repairs. Putting off roof repairs can lead to leaks in your roof developing and existing ones worsening – we make it as easy as possible for you to ensure your roof stays in the best condition possible to avoid any interior and exterior leaks.

Assess your surroundings

Whilst it’s important to focus on your home in terms of the physical building, you need to also carry out an assessment of the surrounding area. This involves everything in your yard such as large branches that may be close to your roof, or trees that could potentially be rotting with a threat of falling and damaging your roof.

As bad weather arrives, it’ll quickly be too late to carry out extensive works in your yard or on buildings or structures. Make sure you get on top of this prior to the start of the Autumn months so you’ll have peace of mind.

Why not make the most of spending time outside and make sure your grass lawn, outdoor plants and garden beds are all turned over and ready for the cooler months? A little maintenance and care now will ensure they can start afresh when the warmer weather arrives in the Spring.

Seal cracks and gaps

Before the weather gets cold, make sure your home is fully sealed from cool air entering and hot air being lost to the outside. Sealing cracks and gaps around windows and doors is quick and easy to do – and has huge financial benefits. Did you know that this type of heat loss can account for over 25% of the total heat loss from your home in cold months? Yet it’s easily rectified.

You can use a variety of different products from gap filler to weather stripping – or even something as simple as a door snake or a rolled up towel.

Ready to go?

It’s always a little sad saying goodbye to Summer but by preparing your home whilst the weather is still warm, you’ll be able to go into Autumn with peace of mind and a warm comfortable house. Getting everything working efficiently doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and the effort can really pay off when you feel the difference and notice your energy bills dropping.
